Over the last 12 years, the editorial teams at CBS and FOX have devoted so few reports to this main concern of their potential audience that it has remained below the perception threshold in the mass of 154,512 reports broadcast on CBS and the 245,044 reports broadcast on FOX during the same period in the main news on FOX. Media impact research puts this at 1.5%. With “9/11” almost a quarter of a century ago, terror had penetrated into the consciousness of Americans from one day to the next with such intensity that such one-time effects have long-term effects. At that time, the experience led to a focus on what unites people, which almost everyone perceived as positive. 23 years later, what divides us is gaining the upper hand – even if this is measured as the second main concern by PEW.

People can only react to something that they see, that is, perceive. What lies below this threshold of perception remains – if at all – in the subconscious. For the ancient Romans, terror was the epitome of fear and horror. More than 2,000 years ago, they already knew that terror acts on a large scale (state terror) as well as on a small. Of its 244,075 reports broadcast since 2013, even FOX devoted 2.4 percent to climate change – and thus not only exceeded the threshold of perception but gave this topic twice as much space as the catastrophic state of the American education system. CBS may go down in history as a “climate channel” – hardly any other topic has received as much attention from the editorial team. Both broadcasters agree that things have not changed for the better during any of the last three administrations. The current cartoons on hurricane coverage illustrate the result by showing Donald Trump claiming that with him as president, there would be no hurricanes to complain about.

Education is and remains the key to a successful life: in professional life, it not only determines the degree of freedom in one's work, but also, of course, how high one's salary will be. Access to the best possible education and training is therefore one of the main concerns of people in the USA, at 81 per cent. But TV networks like CBS or FOX prefer to use their airtime to report on acts of violence or school shootings – instead of using regular, high-quality information to explore the reasons why, in the land of opportunity, access to good kindergartens, schools and universities remains reserved for those who were able to attend these institutions themselves and who have the financial means to buy the key to success.

Although Donald Trump has not been challenged on the war in Ukraine or the war in Israel during his time in the White House, FOX has been particularly critical of America's moral values. The findings of this report are difficult to reconcile with the results of previous reports.

In earlier US Weekly Election Reports, we showed that most of the main concerns of US citizens barely reached the 1.5 percent perception threshold of all reports broadcast: concern no. 1 inflation was at one percent, concern no. 4 drug abuse received a broadcast time of 0.5 percent, etc. However, TV stations give a great deal of airtime to the main concern no. 7 – crime. With what intention?
