Top concern No. II: Dems and Reps lack respect

20 years ago today, Yale University hosted one of its US Presidential Election Debates. Looking at the media tenor analyses, Ed Luttwak asked the oppressive question: “Will Democracy Survive the Media?” Together with the Harvard Kennedy School's Shorenstein Center, we have been presenting data like that in this report ever since. They make it hard for journalists to wash their hands of the question, “Why are Dems and Reps so bad at working together?” like Pontius Pilate in his days.

What has gone wrong in a country that its people consider partisan discord the No. 2 major concern? Normally, issues of inflation, crime, health, education and infrastructure dominate the top 5. Every nation knows the fundamental importance of everyone being able to more or less gather around a virtual “national bondfire”. Why shouldn't Americans have the same desire?
